Connecting Your Own Systems

Behind the wish to give the agent your own data there is usually a concrete problem. The data model has grown over years, nobody has an overview of all the dependencies any more, and still somebody is supposed to find nonsense in it. That is what a tool layer is good for: it holds the rules and the agent does not have to understand the schema. This afternoon you build such a layer once, end to end.

Who it is for

  • Your own laptop with an agent installed
  • An API or database of your own that you are allowed to work on. A test environment is enough
  • Node or Python, whichever is usual for you

  • A pattern for write access with an audit log and rollback

Why MCP, and when an API is enough

The honest comparison. In many cases a documented endpoint plus a description in the repo is the better solution. We first settle whether you need the tool at all.

Cutting the tools

One tool corresponds to one decision, not one table. What names, descriptions and error messages must look like so the agent does not guess. Why validation belongs in the layer and has no place in the prompt.

Hands-on: a server on your API

You build a read-only MCP server with three to five tools on your own system and attach it to your agent. At the end you ask it a question it could not answer without those tools.

Write access without fear

Access keys instead of a full login, separation of reading and writing, a log of every change and a rollback that reverts individual changes. This part decides whether the whole thing may go into production.

Dates
